Tree giveaway coming to Bed-Stuy, Brooklyn
A hundred trees will be given away in Brooklyn Saturday as part of an initiative to plant one million trees throughout the five boroughs by 2017.
MillionTreesNYC, Bedford Stuyvesant Restoration Corporation and the Coalition for the Improvement of Bedford Stuyvesant, will give away the trees at the Restoration Plaza Amphitheater, 1368 Fulton St., from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.
MillionTreesNYC says that adding the leafy organisms to the urban environment helps reduce chronic diseases by promoting physical activity. Many of the trees will also be fruit bearing.
Though preregistration is closed, a certain number of trees will be available for walk-ups and after 12 all the trees are up for grabs.
MillionTreesNYC, a public-private partnership, is one of 132 PlaNYC initiatives proposed by Mayor Michael Bloomberg in 2007.
So far, nearly 800,000 trees have been planted.
