After 49 years of policing in three different states, it’s not enough for Michael Chitwood to tell you he’s seen it all.

The 69-year-old superintendent of the Upper Darby Police Department decided he wanted to share his fondest memories.

In his autobiography, “Tough Cop: Mike Chitwood vs. the ‘Scumbags,’” released in October, the South Philly native tells his most interesting stories collected from a half-century in law enforcement.

In the book, co-written with Harold Gullan and published through Philadelphia-based Camino Books, Chitwood reminisces on 19 years in Philadelphia, five years in Bucks County, 17 years in Maine and eight years in Upper Darby. He also offers his trademark candid opinions on the Boston bombings and the Fort Hood shooting.

And he explains why he still busts down doors on drug raids and joins bike patrols cruising through the streets of the Philadelphia suburb: for the love of the game.

“I want to stay as long as I can,” Chitwood said. “That’s why I put such an emphasis on physical fitness. … These are all important to me and when I can no longer do those that then maybe it would be time to consider leaving, but right now, I don’t even have the slightest inkling to do anything other than what I’m doing.”
