Bloomberg and de Blasio meet at City Hall

Hours after his landslide victory, Mayor-Elect Bill de Blasio met with the current hizzoner at City Hall Wednesday morning.

“It was a cordial conversation, a very helpful conversation, very collegial,” de Blasio said after the hour-long sit-down with Mayor Michael Bloomberg.

The mayor and de Blasio discussed the transition to the next administration, de Blasio said, noting the meeting was “productive.”

“He laid out some of the issues facing the city in the near-term that we needed to coordinate on,” the mayor-elect said. “He talked about some of the ways he had put together his transition process, which was very helpful.”

Bloomberg’s staff offered to help the mayor-elect and his team transition before the inauguration in January, de Blasio said.

“They obviously had prepared transition memos already,” he added.

Though de Blasio said the two didn’t discuss specifics of the city’s impending fiscal crisis — a $2 billion deficit in the next budget — they “agreed to stay in regular touch,” he said.

The meeting was sure to be a little awkward. De Blasio slammed Bloomberg throughout his campaign, using him as a political instrument to illustrate New York’s “tale of two cities.” In a September issue of New York magazine, Bloomberg suggested that de Blasio had run a racially-divisive campaign.

After the comments, Bloomberg refused to discuss the mayoral election further, saying only that his administration would focus on the transition.

“I’ve got an obligation to make the transition from our administration to whatever the next administration is as seamless and as helpful as possible,” Bloomberg said in September.
