School bus drivers’ union plans rally to protest firings

The union representing Boston school bus drivers is planning to stage a rally this weekend in protest of the firing of multiple employees.

“For nearly 40 years, the Boston school bus drivers, hardworking women and men from our communities, have proudly provided safe, on time, professional service to students and parents,” the organization states on its website.

Last month, hundreds of union members staged a protest at the bus yard, causing many angry parents to come down and personally confront the drivers over their children not getting to school. As a result, several members of the union were fired.

“On Oct. 9, Veolia suspended Vice President, Pension Administrator and key benefits advocate Steven Gillis and Chair of the Grievance Committee and local founder Stevan Kirschbaum. Within days, they also suspended Recording Secretary and Chief Steward Andre Francois; three-time former Local President and Steward Garry Murchison; and Steward and Local founding member Richard Lynch,” the website states.

The protest is aimed at Veolia, the company managing the bus business.

“The discriminatory targeting of these particular leaders represents a calculated effort on the part of Veolia and Mayor Menino to break the organizational backbone and infrastructure of the union. On Nov. 1, Gillis and Kirschbaum were fired.”

The protest will take place outside Veolia’s corporate offices in Dorchester at 1 p.m. on Nov. 9.
