Brooklyn resident Nicholas Mevoli died in the Bahamas on Sunday, the Associated Press reported.

Mevoli, 32, was taking part in a freediving competition, where divers swim to great depths without scuba gear, surviving only on the air they are able to hold in their lungs for the duration of the swim.

He began freediving competitively just last year, the AP reported. He broke the U.S. constant weight record soon after.

Nick died on Sunday about 2 p.m. after completing a dive off the coast of Long Island in the Bahamas.

A statement from the Association Internationale pour le Developpement de l’Apnee (AIDA), an international organization for freediving, explained that Nick had made it back to the surface after a dive 72 meters deep, but struggled to breathe and lost consciousness.

“Nick appears to have suffered from a depth-related injury to his lungs,” the AIDA statement said.

Detectives in the Bahamas are reportedly investigating his death.
