Police nab homeless Central Park rape suspect in East Harlem hospital
Police arrested a homeless man suspected of raping a woman in Central Park at an East Harlem hospital after workers tipped off authorities, officials said.
Omar Hoist, 32, was arrested at Metropolitan Hospital on Tuesday night and charged with rape, strangulation and assault for allegedly attacking a woman in Central Park on Sunday morning.
Police said Hoist approached the woman at East 88th Street near Fifth Avenue about 3:30 a.m. They talked and walked together before entering the park near 100th Street.Hoist and the woman walked along a bike path before sitting down on a bench inside the park, police said, at which point he turned violent, dragging her into a grassy area and raping her.
Police said the woman then fled the scene to a nearby hospital.
Hoist allegedly told the woman his fist name, and police released a photo and video of him Monday.
Metropolitan Hospital workers recognized Hoist from the photo and video, according to police.
The reason for Hoist’s hospitalization is confidential.
It was not immediately clear whether Hoist had a lawyer.
