Boston police to students: Lock doors and windows, don’t party too hard

The interim head of the Boston Police Department is reminding Hub students leaving for Thanksgiving break to secure their apartments to avoid becoming victims of a burglary.

Interim Commissioner William Evans said in a message posted online Monday that certain areas of the city experience high levels of break-ins due to students forgetting to lock doors and windows when they depart for the holidays.

He urged students leaving for an extended period of time to make sure doors and windows are locked and air conditioners are removed, especially if they’re accessible from a fire escape. Certain items that are left behind can be particular targets of burglars and should be taken home.

“Jewelry, game systems, and games and iPods also tend to be items that are attractive to would-be perpetrators,” Evans said.

Evans also said that students who live on campus shouldn’t have a false sense of security that their dorm room would be monitored and should secure those areas as well.

Additionally, Evans also warned students returning to the area early that the department would monitor certain areas for parties.

“Should you come back to your residence prior to the start of classes, please keep in mind that we will be monitoring the neighborhoods for loud and underage parties. Understand that these are neighborhoods where people live and work,” he said.
