An MBTA bus driver who is being questioned in the hit-and-run death of a 52-year-old Revere woman was not under the influence of drugs or alcohol at the time of the incident, Suffolk District Attorney Spokesman Jake Wark said Thursday.

Gayle Johnson was hit by a vehicle near the Revere firehouse around 7 p.m. Tuesday, and was then dragged for six blocks, according to police.

Authorities continue to investigate the death.

Authorities are now investigating whether she was hit by a Route 110 MBTA bus driven by a 56-year-old man.

“Since its first moments, this has been a careful and methodical investigation,” Suffolk County District Attorney Daniel F. Conley said in a statement Wednesday. “Ms. Johnson and her loved ones deserve nothing less than our best efforts.”

Johnson’s sister, Karen Johnson, told the Boston Globe that Gayle may have been struck by the same bus she took home from work that night. Authorities have not confirmed that Johnson had travelled on the bus that hit her.

It is not clear whether the driver knew that Johnson had been hit and dragged by the vehicle for about a half-mile. The MBTA bus driver in question was interviewed overnight, and requested a lawyer, Conley said.

In their brief interaction, investigators said they did not observe him to show obvious signs of intoxication

Pursuant to MBTA policy, the driver was subjected to mandatory drug and alcohol testing. Because that testing is mandatory, investigators may not obtain its results without a court order.

Investigators said they began the legal process of obtaining that order on Tuesday night.
