Eight months after the Boston Marathon bombing, a man who was severely injured in the attack has discovered a sparkling silver lining to the devastating experience; one that shines as bright as a diamond.

James “Bim” Costello, of Malden, became engaged over the weekend to Krista D’Agostino, a nurse he met while recovering at Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital.

He announced the news on his Facebook page Sunday night, saying he proposed to D’Agostino while traveling through Lyon, France.

A photograph taken after the Marathon attack shows Costello staggering across Boylston Street, clothing in tatters. He required pig skin grafts on most of his right arm and right leg, and his friends required amputations.

“As you all know, April 15th was one of the worst days of my life, suffering not only physical injuries of my own but the emotional difficulties when I learned about my friends. I soon wondered why and for what reason this had happened,” Costello said in the social media announcement.

“I now realized why I was involved in the tragedy, it was to meet my best friend, and the love of my life. Eights months later I’m happy to announce that we will spend the rest of our lives together,” said Costello, along with a photograph of D’Agostino’s engagement ring.

The announcement drew more than 250 “likes” and nearly 80 congratulatory comments.

The pair is visiting Europe this month on an all-expenses-paid “Heroes Cruise” for 114 Marathon bombing survivors and first responders, which was sponsored by Vantage Deluxe World Travel.
