An anonymous Newton-area resident with an apparent aversion to blinking lights and baby Jesus statues recently mailed a holiday letter so seething, it gives The Grinch and Scrooge a run for their money.

The Hunter family of Emerson Street said they have put up their Christmas display for nearly four decades, but were distraught recently to receive a letter that basically calls it gaudy and demands that they take it down.

The letter says that “Not everyone in the neighborhood is Christian and many people do not wish to see such a flagrant display.” It also criticizes the appearance of the decorations, saying “All religious matters aside, your decorations themselves are beyond tasteless,” and “cheap, tacky and kitschy.”

The letter was postmarked in Boston and signed “your neighbors.”

Ah, the holidays. So warm and cozy.

In addition to holiday lights, the display also includes Santa and baby Jesus in a nativity scene.

The family defended the display on Fox News, saying “It’s Christmas. You can’t take Christ out of Christmas.”

No one has taken credit for the letter, and it has not been authenticated. But as word spreads of the unneighborly note, support for the Hunters is growing. The Newton Patch reports that people are planning to gather at the home at 7 p.m. Saturday to sing Christmas carols.
