Metro Philadelphia had a big year. Not only did we redesign our website but we saw traffic increase almost every month. The top stories of the year are not necessarily the ones that got the most clicks. Here are the top five most-read stories on Metro Philadelphia’s website.

Dog and cat consumption would be banned if bill passes state senate

Metro didn’t know it, either.

Apparently, in Pennsylvania, it is legal for a person to kill a dog or cat and eat it, as long as it is all done humanely and in the privacy of their homes. It is illegal for restaurants to sell and serve cat or dog meat, however.

In our story, about a bill making its way through the state legislature that would make it illegal to breed and kill dogs or cats just to eat their meat, someone got confused.

We wrote about a restaurant in West Philadelphia that was caught serving the pet meat and was shut down. That was 11 years ago. But someone must have missed the “closed down” part, because some Facebook users illogically decided Danny’s Wok was serving cat and dog meat, and caused a whole lot of ruckus. We know, we’re still scratching our heads, too.

Tip skimming lawsuit against Chickies and Pete’s grows

A story about bartender Anthony LaPlante’s class-action lawsuit against Chickie and Pete’s was widely read as lawyers predicted up to 300 plaintiffs would join in claiming that they had to pay back two to four percent of their gross sales each day. The suit is pending and has 77 co-plaintiffs.

Voorhees’ Jeff Langum has the world’s best beard

Metro.us blew up in early November when we posted that Jeff Langum, of Voorhees, N.J. took home a first-place trophy at the World Beard & Moustache Championships in Germany.

The 39-year-old’s story was shared thousands of time on Facebook and Twitter.

Much to the chagrin of baby faces everywhere, Langum said it only took him two years to grow.

You might see Langum’s face more in the upcoming year — he said he had some sponsorship deals and modeling gigs in the works.

Philly principal goes to work for Obama, US Dept. of Education

Sharif El-Mekki, principal of Mastery Charter School’s Shoemaker campus in West Philadelphia, was chosen by the U.S. Secretary of Education as one of three principals to participate in the first Principal Ambassador Fellowship (PAF) program.

El-Mekki was chosen out of about 450 applicants.

Facebook users jumped on this story and shared it thousands of times.

Police ID man beaten to death with baseball bat in Wissinoming

Police released the name of a man beaten to death earlier that morning in Wissinoming for a widely read story, shared mostly on Facebook.

Joseph Britton, 30, of Levittown, was found in his car beaten to death with a baseball bat. Witnesses saw four males in the area. No arrests have been made.
