Delaware man found with more than 2,000 bags of heroin

Three hours before midnight on Christmas Day a 35-year-old Delaware man was busted with more than 2,000 bags of heroin, state police said.

Donald R. Hester, of Lincoln, Del., was arrested in Millsboro abandoned the bags of heroin in a parking lot before a traffic stop, according to Delaware State Police.

Hester was pulled over at 9:10 p.m. Tuesday for not signaling as he turned right from West Dupont Boulevard onto Wharton Street in his 2001 Cadillac Seville.

When a state trooper attempted to pull his vehicle to the side of the street, Hester immediately made a right turn onto Houston Street and started speeding. Police spotted the Cadillac stopped in a parking lot off of Houston Street after a short chase. Hester was cornered and then taken into custody.

Inside the Cadillac troopers found two plastic grocery bags that contained 2,292 bags, or 34.38 grams, of heroin. The other contained 119 grams of marijuana. A search of Hester’s vehicle resulted in the recovery of an additional 46 grams of marijuana and $2,312. After a search police found $1,977 in his pants pocket.

Hester was charged with two counts of possession with intent to deliver a controlled substance, possession of a controlled substance in a tier 5 quantity, possession of marijuana, three counts of possession of drug paraphernalia, failure to signal a lane change, and driving at an unreasonable speed. He was committed to Sussex Correctional Institute on $65,802 secured bail.
