It appears that for the first time in four years, New Yorkers did in fact get more creative in naming their progeny — but only a little bit.

According to the Department of Health, the most popular baby names in 2012 were Jayden for boys and Sophia for girls.

This is the fourth year running that Jayden has topped the list, though the girls’ names have seen an upset.

Isabella, for three years the most popular girls’ name, was overtaken by Sophia and left behind in second place.

Sophia, however, was not a newcomer: prior to Isabella’s three-year winning streak, Sophia had topped the charts.

More than 760 Jaydens and more than 607 Sophias were born in New York City in 2012, according to DOH birth certificate records.

And the city welcomed even more new New Yorkers in 2012 than in 2011: 202 more babies were born last year than in the year prior.

In general, the most popular named remained the same from 2011 to 2012.

Emma and Olivia switched places at third and fourth, Emily and Mia switched places at fifth and sixth, and Chloe jumped two slots from ninth to seventh. 2011′s tenth most popular name, Sofia, was replaced in 2012 by Ava.

In a perhaps disappointing turn for the mayor, the name Michael dropped from fifth to sixth, overtaken by Matthew. The mayor last year had been pleased that Michael — “a fine name,” he said — had risen from seventh place in 2010 to fifth place in 2011. Justin was knocked off the list entirely, after being at 7th in 2011. Ryan was a new addition at ninth place, while Alexander remained the tenth most popular name.
