Man, dog die in Upper Darby hit-and-run

A 69-year-old Upper Darby man and his dog were killed in a hit-and-run Sunday, and police said motorists drove around his lifeless body.

Richard Patterson’s dog, Babby, ran away. He found the white Poodle around 4:30 p.m., and then started walking home, according to Police Superintendent Michael Chitwood. While he crossed Providence Road at Arbor Lea Road around 5 p.m. an older model, light-colored sedan flew up Providence and knocked Babby 40 feet.

Chitwood said Patterson was thrown about 50 feet, and his sneakers were knocked off his feet.

According to witnesses who called 911, cars completely avoided Patterson as lay in the street, “If not dying getting ready to die,” Chitwood said.

Chitwood said he can “Guarantee” the driver was “high, or drunk.”

“Whoever did this, man or woman, is a true scumbag,” Chitwood said.

Chitwood said Patterson, a retiree who lived in town for close to 50 years with his wife, was known to walk through town with his dog.

Police are evaluating surveillance video to determine the make and model of the light-colored vehicle.

Chitwood said he always makes a point to meet with the family’s of the deceased.

“I told them I promise we’ll try everything, but can’t promise we’ll bring him in,” he said.
