The city of Cambridge is paving the way for everything gay.

The Advocate magazine has issued its annual Gayest Cities in America list, and the city across the Charles has scored a No. 4 ranking.

With a population of 106,471 Cantabrigians, Cambridge may be the little sister to Boston. But it’s on the forefront of gay rights, according to the piece, citing the city council’s establishment in 1997 of antidiscrimination protections for transgender people.

The story also mentions Councilwoman E. Denise Simmons, who was the United States’ first African-American lesbian mayor, serving from 2008 to 2009.

And of course, the story listed Cambridge’s vibrant gay nightlife, including queer dance parties at ZuZu and male dancers at The Paradise.

The only cities to beat Cambridge for a higher ranking include Seattle at No. 3, Pasadena at No. 2 and Washington, D.C., in the top spot.

Here is the complete list of America’s most gay-friendly cities:

1. Washington, D.C.
2. Pasadena, Calif.
3. Seattle, Wash.
4. Cambridge, Mass.
5. Atlanta, Ga.
6. St Louis, Mo.
7. Madison, Wisc.
8. Salt Lake City, tah
9. Oakland, Calif.
10. Arlington, Va.

The rankings were determined based on a variety of factors, including gay elected officials, lesbian-coupled households, and best gay bars. Click here for a breakdown of the rankings’ statistics.
