More than 30,000 Christmas trees were recycled during the city’s MulchFest last weekend, the Parks Department said.

The number toppled the previous record of 26,000 trees mulched last year.

The 18th annual event gave New Yorkers an opportunity to mulch their trees into wood chips that will be used in parks and gardens throughout the city.

“Mulch helps our city’s trees and plants by deterring weeds, retaining moisture and adding nutrients to the soil,” according to a statement by Liam Kavanagh, first deputy commissioner for the parks department.

Birdie, GreeNYC’s mascot, is the face of MulchFest. GreeNYC partnered with the Parks Department and the Department of Sanitation for the event.

“Everything that we can do to reduce, reuse and recycle our precious resources is a step in the right direction for a cleaner and greener New York City,” Sanitation Commissioner John Doherty said.
