Two men – identified as “persons of interest’ – were detained and are being questioned today regarding the murder of a 26-year-old woman in Northern Liberties, police said.

Capt. James Clark said Monday that while there is not enough evidence to charge the two men with the murder of Amber Long, who was killed in front of her mother during an attempted robbery around 10:30 p.m. Sunday night, police continue to collect evidence.

“Hopefully, we’ll be able to make an arrest very shortly in this tragedy,” he said.

Police are holding a house in Northwest Philadelphia, on the 5600 block of Camac Street, which the two men, who fit the descriptions of the attackers, were found. Police are awaiting approval of a search warrant before they enter.

According to police, Long, of the 1700 block of West Ritner Street, was walking with her 50-year-old mother along North Front Street Sunday night around 10:30 p.m.

They had just gotten off the train at Spring Garden Station along the Market Frankford Line, at Front and Spring Garden, and were walking northbound on Front Street toward Long’s car, which was parked at Front and Poplar Street.

As mother and daughter approached the 900 block of Front Street, two light-complexion men approached them, Clark said. One of them snatched the mother’s purse from her shoulder and ran.

The second attacker attempted to take the purse off Amber, who put up a fight. During the struggle, the attacker pulled out a gun and fired. The purse dropped to the ground and was left behind.

The men fled north on Front Street in a four-door, dark sedan, Clark said.

“It’s very sad, it’s very random,” he said. “I believe these males saw them as easy targets.”

Long was pronounced dead at Hahnemann University Hospital at 11:15 p.m., police said.

How’s mom doing?

“Her daughter sort of died in her arms,” Clark said. “So I’m sure she’s devastated.”

In any homicide, the city offers a $20,000 reward for information that leads to the arrest and conviction of a suspect in a homicide.

Anyone with information is asked to submit a tip via telephone at 215.686.TIPS (8477) or text a tip to PPD TIP or 773847.
