A major winter storm could blanket parts of the city with more than a foot of snow Tuesday and Wednesday.

Up to 14 inches of snow could accumulate during this storm, according to the National Weather Service. A winter storm warning has been issued from noon Tuesday to 6 a.m. Wednesday.

Snowfall began midmorning Tuesday and is forecast to continue through the night, tapering off early Wednesday. The heaviest snowfall is expected Tuesday afternoon.

Up to 5 inches of snow could accumulate during the day, with up to 8 inches of accumulation possible Tuesday night.

Temperatures will reach the mid-20s Tuesday morning before dropping steadily. Wind chills could reach minus 10 Tuesday night, with gusts of up to 35 mph.

The weather service advises the snow will cause hazardous travel conditions, with heavy winds adding to the difficulty of navigating the several inches of snow already accumulated on roads before the afternoon commute.

“Significant amounts of snow are forecast that will make travel dangerous. Only travel in an emergency,” the National Weather Service said, advising travelers to keep an extra flashlight, food and water in vehicles.

The city’s Office of Emergency Management issued a hazardous travel advisory for Tuesday and Wednesday.

A snow alert by the Department of Sanitation is in effect, but the National Weather Service cautions snow removal will be difficult during the storm. Plow progress is available here.

Parking meters remain in effect but alternate-side parking has been suspended Tuesday.

During the last major snowstorm, city public schools were closed. For updates, visit nyc.gov or here for suburban closures.

Some 15 inches of snow have fallen in the city so far this season, roughly 5 inches more usual. The snow could also break a Jan. 21 record of 6 inches, set in 2001.
