A marijuana advocacy group is taking its message for NFL officials to the Super Bowl.

The Marijuana Policy Project, which pushed for legalization in Colorado, spent $5,000 to rent five 48- to 60-foot-wide billboards surrounding MetLife Stadium in New Jersey that highlight what advocates say are hypocritical NFL policies.

“Marijuana is less toxic, less addictive and less harmful to the body than alcohol,” a spokesman for the group, Mason Tvert, said in a statement. “Why would the NFL want to steer its players toward drinking and away from making the safer choice to use marijuana instead?”

The Denver Broncos and Seattle Seahawks, who face off Sunday, both hail from states where recreational marijuana is legal.

Last week, NFL Commissioner said the league would consider allowing medicinal marijuana. Seahawks coach Pete Carroll also indicated the drug’s medicinal value should be explored.

“We have to continue to explore and compete to find ways that are going to make our game a better game and take care of our players in the best way possible,” Carroll said Monday.

The group will deliver a petition to the NFL Wednesday calling on the league to change its marijuana policies.

The billboards, which were produced by Tvert, echo their message. One asks, “why does the league punish us for making the safer choice?”

Tvert explained, “Taking a big hit of marijuana poses less potential harm than taking a big hit from an NFL linebacker or a big shot of tequila.”

The billboards are located on I-78 near the New Jersey Turnpike toll plaza in Newark, I-495 leading to the Lincoln Tunnel in North Bergen, I-80 east off the turnpike in Teaneck, and the Garden State Parkway near the Raritan toll plaza north of Sayreville.
