Rep. Michael Grimm apologizes for physically threatening NY1 reporter

A Staten Island congressman apologized for threatening an NY1 reporter with physical harm after the State of the Union address.

Rep. Michael Grimm called NY1 reporter Michael Scotto on Wednesday and said he “overreacted,” the news organization reported.

Scotto tried to ask Grimm about an ongoing federal investigation into his campaign fundraising after an interview about the president’s address. Grimm wouldn’t let him finish the question, then threatened to throw the reporter off a balcony, according to footage from NY1.

“No, no, you’re not man enough, you’re not man enough. I’ll break you in half. Like a boy,” Grimm also said.

After calling Scotto, Grimm told reporters later Wednesday, “I was wrong, it shouldn’t have happened. … I lost my cool.”

“My constituents know that I’m extremely passionate about them,” Grimm said, adding, “They expect Michael Grimm to have their back and that’s what I’m known for.”

“Unfortunately,” the congressman said, “when you are that type of person that has a lot of passion, your emotions can get the better of you. There’s no excuse.”

Grimm said he had not been drinking alcohol before the interview.

In a statement after the incident, Grimm said he was “extremely annoyed” that Scotto asked an off-topic question, accusing the reporter of taking a “disrespectful and cheap shot.”
