First lady Chirlane McCray to chair Mayor’s Fund to Advance New York City
First lady Chirlane McCray will chair the Mayor’s Fund to Advance New York City, her husband announced Thursday.
“She understand what it takes to drive change,” Mayor Bill de Blasio said at the Osborne Association in the Bronx.
As chair, McCray plans to expand the fund’s previous successes, building on former Mayor Michael Bloomberg’s Young Men’s Initiative, as well as outlining new projects that reflect the de Blasio administration’s agenda.
Her office will be across from City Hall. The position is voluntary and unpaid.
Established 20 years ago, the fund is a nonprofit that facilitates public-private partnerships across the five boroughs. The nonprofit supports a wide range of causes, inlcuding the environment, youth development and the arts.
In 2012, the fund’s budget was $37 million.
“It really is the people’s fund,” McCray said.
