Power outages in ‘heavily damaged locations’ to last another day, PECO warns

PECO crews have repaired much of the damage wrought by last Wednesday’s ice storm, but some power outages will remain for another full day, the energy company informed the public today.

“As of 4am 21k customers remain w/o service,” PECO tweeted at 6 a.m. today. “Crews working hard to get customers back on. Heavily damaged locations out through tomorrow.”

Power outage numbers, which PECO is updating on a live map of the Delaware Valley, are actually fluctuating and increasing in some areas as crews must shut off certain circuits to repair others.

For example, the number of customers affected in Philadelphia County is currently at 716, up from about 400 on Sunday.

“Numbers may shift as we may need to take customers out of service temporarily to allow crews to safely restore to all,” PECO tweeted in explanation.

As of 11 a.m. the number of customers in Philadelphia and the five-county area without power was approximately 17,222, based on the PECO map.

After the ice storm on Wednesday, Feb. 5, the total number of people without power was estimated at about 600,000 in the Delaware Valley.

PECO has called it the second worst storm in their history since Superstorm Sandy in 2012.

PECO is requesting that any customers who still don’t have power contact them at 800-841-4141.
