Cuomo rejects de Blasio’s ‘chaotic’ minimum wage hike proposal

Gov. Andrew Cuomo preemptively dashed Mayor Bill de Blasio’s hopes of Albany allowing the city to set its own minimum wage.

During a radio interview on Tuesday, Cuomo didn’t directly spurn the proposal laid out by de Blasio during his State of the City address. However, the governor suggested that allowing local governments to set their own wages could create a “chaotic situation.”

“I’m in favor of something called the constitution of the state of New York, which suggests that we have localities and what the localities deem important for the localities is taken seriously,” Cuomo said.

“But we are also one state, and we don’t want to cannibalize ourselves,” he added.

De Blasio announced on Monday that he would ask Albany to grant the administration control over the minimum wage and “send a powerful signal to the people of New York – that we honor work … and that we are committed to making work pay.”

Legislation passed last year by state lawmakers will already push the minimum wage to $9 per hour by 2016. The current statewide minimum wage is $8 an hour, compared to the national $7.25.

“Let’s move on,” Bronx Democratic state Sen. Jeff D. Klein, co-leader of the state Senate, said at an unrelated press conference on Tuesday.
