Bratton not bothered by de Blasio’s call after bishop’s arrest

Police Commissioner Bill Bratton swatted away any inferences that a call placed by Mayor Bill de Blasio after an ally’s arrest was inappropriate.

“I have no problem with it whatsoever. He can call anybody he wants any time he wants,” Bratton said at an unrelated press event on Tuesday. “I have no issue whatsoever with him calling anybody in my staff, or his people calling people in my staff.”

The New York Post reported Bratton was caught unaware about de Blasio’s late-night call to the Police Department’s public information office regarding Bishop Orlando Findlayter’s arrest.

Findlayter, a friend and political ally to the mayor, was arrested on Jan. 10 for a traffic violation while driving on a suspended license. He was released by the precinct chief, allegedly irrespective of the mayor’s call.

Bratton reportedly learned about incident the next morning, telling reporters there was no need for him to get involved.

“I’m known as the ‘great delegator,’” he said. “There was nothing I needed to be notified of immediately. It could wait until 6:30 a.m. as far as I’m concerned.”

When pressed on whether it might appear to the public as a double standard for the mayor to make calls on behalf of a friend, Bratton was still dismissive.

“That may be your perception, but it’s not mine,” he said.
