Mayor Martin Walsh has extended an invitation to Pope Francis to visit Boston during a possible 2015 trip to the United States.

“I think people in Boston would be very excited about the pope coming,” the mayor told the Boston Globe on Thursday. “I think it would also be good for the city.”

Walsh wrote a six-paragraph letter to the pope, and asked Cardinal Sean O’Malley to hand deliver it this week. O’Malley has expressed doubt that Pope Francis would make the trek to Boston, but reportedly told Walsh he would be honored to deliver the letter.

In 1979, Pope John Paul II made a visit to Boston. Walsh wrote in the letter to Pope Francis that he would love to have him bless the park in Dorchester that was named for Pope John Paul II.

“We would like you to consider blessing the park during your visit,” Walsh wrote. “I would be deeply honored if you would accept this invitation.”

No travel plans for Pope Francis have been confirmed yet. The Vatican’s spokesman, Rev. Federico Lombardi, told the Globe in an email that the pope always receives invitations “with attention and gratitude,” but that “the decision to travel to a certain place is another thing, and it is too early now for me to speak of a concrete project of a visit of the Pope in the USA.”
