Cops order 200 new speed guns

The New York City Police Department will soon be armed with 200 new speed guns, almost four times as many as city cops currently own.

The recently appointed NYPD Chief of Transportation Thomas Chan revealed to members of the City Council’s transportation committee that the NYPD currently only has 56 speed guns across 32 precincts.

Chan added that efforts are already underway to train officers in every precinct on how to use the new guns, most of which will use laser technology.

Chan testified that the new equipment and training would help officers put into practice the Police Department’s commitment to the new administration’s Vision Zero plan to eliminate pedestrian deaths.

“If they’re going toward an intersection and a vehicle in front of them fails to yield to a pedestrian, he can pull that vehicle over for failure to yield at pedestrian,” Chan told the committee.

Council members voiced their appreciation for the department’s new focus on pedestrian collisions and speeding enforcement, regardless of whether or not the city is able to reduce the the citywide speed limit as laid out in Mayor Bill de Blasio’s 63-prong plan.

“Because that speed limit reduction just by posting a 25 mph sign will probably be obeyed as the 30 mph speed limit in our city is obeyed right now,” Bronx Councilman Jimmy Vacca, former chair of the transpiration committee, said. “It’s not obeyed.”

Other members were cautiously optimistic of the shift towards enforcement.

“This is a big change in NYPD culture and structure,” said Brooklyn Councilman Brad Lander. “Recruits don’t sign up for the police academy in their minds to write speeding tickets.”
