Family and friends of a Boston University alumnus who has been missing for nearly three weeks plan to hold a vigil this weekend near where he was last seen.

Eric Munsell, 24, who lives in the North End, was last seen late Feb. 8 during a night out with friends to celebrate his birthday at downtown Boston bar, according to Boston police and his family.

Munsell’s father, Keith, said on Tuesday that a vigil is being planned for 6 p.m. Saturday near the New England Aquarium, one of his son’s favorite places to visit and near where he was last seen. Munsell grew up in New Jersey and his father said some of his friends from there will be coming up for the vigil.

“It’s tough. The vigil, I don’t think it’s going to help Eric, but I think it could help a lot of his friends,” said Keith Munsell. He and Munsell’s mother came to Boston just days after their son went missing.

Boston police put out a missing person alert asking for the public’s help.

Police and Munsell’s father said he was removed from Market on Broad Street at about 11:25 p.m. The last video sighting of him came near 255 State St. about 12:30 a.m. Sunday. His phone went dead at 12:45 a.m.

Friends created a Facebook page to gather support and to share information in the search for Munsell.

Munsell’s father said the last few weeks since his son went missing have been “horrific.”

“I go from, like, totally driven trying to do things that would help to completely an emotional wreck in a matter of minutes,” Munsell’s father said. “Frankly, the thing that’s kept me going and as composed as I’ve been so far is I’m trying to do everything that would make Eric happy and proud of me and make as much positive change out of it as I can, because I know that’s what he would do for me.”
