In a move that has commuters cheering, Boston’s Callahan Tunnel officially reopened to traffic at 5 a.m. Monday.

“To that end, MassDOT is pleased to share that this closure is trending to end several days ahead of schedule,” MassDOT Secretary and CEO Richard Davey said in a statement.

Administrators of the construction said they were pleased everything had gone according to plan, despite detractors guessing the project would be a major hassle for commuters, who were forced to seek alternate routes.

“There were doubts on how the region would respond to the detours, and I am thankful to the public and our project team for showing us that the complete closure was the right choice,” said Administrator Frank DePaola.

The $19.3 million contract for McCourt Construction included additional incentive payments of $71,500 for each day the tunnel opened prior to the advertised opening date of March 12.

The project was funded through toll revenues.

The tunnel, which carries traffic from downtown Boston to Logan Airport, closed on Dec. 27 for extensive construction work. Though the main tunnel has reopened, the South Boston Bypass Haul Road and HOV Express Lane restrictions will not end until Wednesday.
