Mayor Bill de Blasio tapped a new chief of the agency responsible for trash, recycling, snow plowing and more on Saturday as the brunt of the the winter season fades out.

Kathryn Garcia, 44, will take over the Sanitation Department from exiting head John Doherty, who de Blasio carried over from the Bloomberg administration for the last two and a half months.

While spending the last eight years with the the DEP, Garcia spent a decade with a non-profit consulting and advocacy group before joining the DEP under the Bloomberg administration.

Garcia, currently chief operating officer of the city Department of Environmental Protection, began her career as an intern with the same department she will take over in April.

“I’m thrilled to be back,” she said, adding that she was hoping to improve the number of women on the job.

“There are quite a few women in the Department of Sanitation now who are doing their best every day and meeting all of the demands of this job,” Garcia said. “And it is not an easy job to pick up tons of garbage every day.”

She becomes the second woman to hold the top post. The first came under ex de Blasio boss former Mayor David Dinkins.

A mother of two in Park Slope, Brooklyn, Garcia most immediately replaces Doherty, who joined the agency as a worker in 1960 and served 16 as commissioner.

“This guy is a New York hero,” de Blasio called Doherty, who was not at Saturday’s announcement.
