A man suspected in multiple break-ins in Cambridge was caught in part because he was wearing a court-ordered GPS device.

Jonathan Thompson, 24, of Cambridge, was charged with breaking and entering in the daytime and intimidation of a witness, Cambridge police said on Wednesday. He was arrested last week.

While Thompson is only charged with the one house break-in, police said they suspect he is responsible for others that have occurred recently in the city.

Police last week identified an emerging pattern of about 10 home burglaries in two neighborhoods, with most occurring in the area of Columbia, Windsor and Harvard streets. Many of the break-ins occurred between Monday and Friday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The burglar gained entry by forcing open a front door and laptops computers seemed to be the target.

Thompson was initially identified as a potential suspect because of information provided to police from the Probation Department regarding his GPS monitoring device, according to police. The investigation also led to an identification of Thompson allegedly in a break-in.

“The Cambridgeport and Area 4 neighborhoods have been victimized by several housebreaks of late and we hope this arrest will increase the safety and security of the area,” Cambridge Police Deputy Superintendent Paul Ames said in a statement.
