Queens teaching assistant arrested for relationship with teen student: officials
A Queens teaching assistant was arrested Thursday for having sex with a 14-year-old student of the Maspeth school where she worked, city officials said.
Clara Somodi, 39, was charged with rape and other offenses after an investigation found she had repeated sexual encounters with a boy who attened P.S. 9, the Walter Reed School, according to police and the Department of Education.
Officials discovered the alleged sex abuse when police said the student, having missed a day of class, was asked by another staffer where he was. The student said he was with his “girlfriend” before giving details about his teachers.
The Department of Education said the teen is being provided counseling and Somodi was suspended.
“If the allegation is true, it would be extremely disturbing. We have zero tolerance for any kind of sexual behavior among our educators and students,” the department said in a statement.
A paraprofessional, Somodi has worked at the school for 10 years. She was arrested for rape at about 1 a.m. Thursday after being questioned by police.
She was also charged with criminal sex act and endangering the welfare of a child.
Somodi was expected to be arraigned Thursday night.
