The Fabergé Big Egg Hunt is well-named.

For one thing, the search area will be huge, with eggs hidden all over the five boroughs. And these eggs haven’t been taken from a carton and dyed festive colors — the sculptures stand 2 1/2 feet tall and have been sponsored by big-name companies and designers.

And when the eggs are “found” with the aid of a smartphone app and eventually auctioned off, they stand to raise some pretty big bucks for charity.

The hunt kicks off in New York on Tuesday and runs through April 17, marking the first time the event has come to the United States. It has previously toured the U.K. and Ireland, with stops in London, Glasgow, Liverpool, Manchester and Dublin.

Members of the public can participate in the hunt with a free phone app that allows people to “check in” every time they come across an egg.

Each egg is unique, created by artists, fashion designers and architects like Julian Schnabel, Ralph Lauren and Zaha Hadid.

After the hunt has run its course, the eggs will be auctioned off at Sotheby’s, with proceeds split between elephant conservation organization Elephant Family and Studio in a School, an art program for New York City children.
