The family of a 23-year-old Boston University student from China who was killed in the Marathon bombings announced on Monday the formation of a foundation to honor her memory.

The Lingzi Foundation, named for Lu Lingzi, is a non-profit that will help provide educational opportunities for courageous, adventurous and ambitious students like Lingzi and support organizations that are making a positive impact in their communities, the organization said.

“Lingzi was a bright and confident young woman who yearned for life, loved beauty and pursued happiness,” Lu Jun, Lingzi’s father, said in a statement. “The Lingzi Foundation will honor the life and dreams of our beloved daughter. She was full of love and compassion and enjoyed a splendid life experience here in Boston. We hope to carry on Lingzi’s positive spirit and encourage others to follow their passion and to pursue their own dreams.”

The foundation will offer scholarships for students who share Lingzi’s drive to enrich their lives, explore new ideas and break down barriers.

Additionally, the foundation has eight athletes running this year’s Marathon to raise funds for the effort.

Lingzi was one of three people killed in the April 15 blasts.
