More than 865,000 sign up for New York State health care exchange

New York State officials say enrolled more than 865,000 residents through its statewide health care exchanged.

Almost three out of four New Yorker State residents who signed up for health insurance before Tuesday’s deadline were uninsured when they applied.

State officials said that 70 percent of those who enrolled before March 1 had no coverage when they applied for health care under the NY State of Health exchange.

In total, the state reported having received 1,217,493 applications since opening operations in October — 865,487 of which have already enrolled for coverage.

About 39,000 New Yorkers across the state enrolled immediately ahead of the deadline, with thousands more having turned in their applications. The state will forgive tardy applicants as long as they made an effort to sign up before April 1.

The next enrollment period for coverage in 2015 begins on Nov. 15. Those who failed to apply for insurance and did not qualify for exemptions for the current enrollment period will be required to pay a $95 penalty or a percentage of their income.

Overall, the state said it is on its way to at least match its original goal of 1.1 million enrollees by the end of 2016.

“Under the leadership of [Gov. Andrew] Cuomo, hundreds of thousands of New Yorkers to have the peace of mind and security that come with having quality, affordable health insurance,” wrote Donna Frescatore, executive director of NY State of Health in a statement.

“Going forward, we will continue to help individuals, families and small businesses across the state to access the insurance coverage they need,” she added.

Across the country, President Barack Obama boasted on Wednesday that 7.1 million Americans signed up for health insurance as mandated by the 2010 Affordable Care Act before the April 1 deadline.
