A cyclist was killed on Spice Street in Charlestown this afternoon after being struck by a motor vehicle.

The motorist involved reportedly fled the scene. The Boston Globe reported that police were looking for trucks in the area.

The Sullivan Square exit on 93 Northbound was closed due to the investigation.

The victim was not immediately identified.

Following the death, Boston Cyclists Union Executive Director Pete Stidman released a statement saying the group was saddened by the “all too common tragedy.”

“Nothing can excuse consciously leaving another person lying in the street, if that is indeed what happened. We won’t know the details of this crash for months or possibly years because death investigations are sealed. But what we know about crashes involving bicycles and large vehicles is that fatalities often occur when cyclists and pedestrians are trapped under the rear wheels of the vehicle.”

Stidman said sideguards and wheelguards can prevent that from happening, and that they should be standard on all large vehicles in the city.

“The City of Boston took the first step by installing them on the Public Works Dept. fleet last year. Now it’s clearly time to take the next step and make them mandatory for all contractors to the city. We have to nudge the rest of the trucking industry into action,” Stidman said.
