Two years after the IRS raided his apartment, Chaka Fattah Jr. is suing for $10 million in damages and an apology.

Fattah filed a lawsuit late last month against the federal government over a life-changing IRS raid of his former apartment that ruined his reputation and career, he claims.

“I haven’t been able to find virtually any new clients since that time,” said Fattah Jr., son of congressman Chaka Fattah and head of 259 Consulting. “This has damaged my credit; this has damaged by ability to handle any financial matter.”

“I’m hopeful that a court-ordered formal apology and monetary judgement will help clear my name and go a long way toward restoring my professional reputation.”

The raid on Fattah Jr.’s apartment took place in the early morning hours of Feb. 29, 2012. An Inquirer photographer got pictures of investigators leaving the Ritz after the raid — and Fattah Jr. believes that proves that a federal employee tipped off the media.

“It’s 6:30 on a cold Wednesday morning in February. How did they know that it was going to happen?” Fattah said.

According to reports, the raid was focused on Fattah’s job working for an entity linked with Delaware Valley High Schools. That contract was terminated directly as a result of the raid, Fattah said, depriving him of income.

“I worked very hard to build up my business,” Fattah said. “There have been no charges to date. I have never been audited. I have not been assessed any additional taxes.

It’s more than 2 years later and any authority for them to do this doesn’t include them having approval to leak the existence of an investigation to the media.”

An IRS spokeswoman declined to comment on the status of the investigation into Fattah Jr.
