The New York City Police Department is heightening security measures in local synagogues after Sunday’s tragic shooting at Jewish community centers in Missouri.

Hours after suspect was arrested for the shooting deaths of three victims in a Kansas City suburb, local officials and authorities in New York City vowed to stay vigilant on the eve of the Jewish holiday of Passover.

Late Sunday, Mayor Bill de Blasio offered the city’s condolences to the shooting victims, their families and the larger Jewish community.

“The NYPD is taking all steps to ensure the safety and security of Jewish individuals and institutions as Passover is being ushered in,” de Blasio added.

NYPD said on Monday that they would increase their presence in and around Jewish communities and religious centers.

A staunch supporter of gun control, Comptroller Scott Stringer also sent his regards to the Jewish community.

“As we gather together as families, let us remember those who were lost,” Stringer said in a statement, “and let us recommit ourselves to ending the scourge of gun violence before another community is torn apart.”

On Monday, human rights groups said the Kansas City shooter, Frazier Glenn Cross, had connections to local white supremacists groups. Local reporters recorded video that appears to show Cross yelling “Heil Hitler” during his arrest.

Earlier in April, Police Commissioner Bill Bratton met with Jewish leaders to ask the community to keep alert and vigilant.

“We believe that by working with you, the communities we serve, we can continue to make this city safe from crime and terrorism for all residents,” Bratton said at the time.
