Free coffee on Wawa Day as store turns 50

It’s Wawa Day!

But isn’t that every day, you might ask yourself?

Mayor Michael Nutter on Wednesday will officially mark April 16 as Wawa Day, as everyone’s favorite convenience store celebrates its 50th anniversary. And participating Wawas will give away free coffee on Wednesday.

The day is filled with fun events both at Wawa’s very first store on MacDade Boulevard in Folsom and at 17th and Arch streets in Center City, where Nutter will christen Wawa Day.

At both stores, a photo exhibit of hoagie history that chronicles the development of the sandwich will be on display as well as original advertisements and signage from 1964.

Also, Howard Stoeckel, Wawa’s former president and CEO and its current vice president, will launch the sale of his book, “The Wawa Way: How a Funny Name and Six Core Values Revolutionized Convenience.”

“Wawa is a fixture in the Philadelphia region and an extraordinary corporate citizen,” Nutter said in a news release.

Folsom celebration details:
6 to 7 a.m.
Visitors to the store will see 1964 photos and signage, talk to Wawa associates dressed in vintage store uniforms and hear Wawa historian Maria Thompson tell stories from over the years.

17th and Arch celebration details:
8 to 8:30 a.m.
Nutter will proclaim April 16 as Wawa Day. Special guest Benjamin Franklin and others will unveil a rendering of Stoeckel’s new book.

Evening reception in Philadelphia
6 to 9 p.m.
Wawa associates, customers, community partners and local officials will celebrate the milestone at the convention center. Gov. Ed Rendell is slated to give a speech. Nutter and Rendell will be presented with a namesake hoagie.

Wawa will present a $50,000 check to the Philadelphia Summer Youth Job Program, made possible through The Wawa Foundation.
