A Staten Island congressman who recently threatened a reporter is expected to be indicted by the U.S. attorney in New York, his lawyer confirmed early Friday night.

Federal authorities have been investigating Rep. Michael Grimm for alleged campaign finance violations. The U.S. attorney’s office informed the Republican congressman that criminal charges will be filed, attorney William McGinley said in a statement that was first reported by POLITICO.

“After more than two years of investigation plagued by malicious leaks, violations of grand jury secrecy, and strong-arm tactics, the U.S. Attorney’s Office has disclosed its intent to file criminal charges against Congressman Grimm,” the statement said. “We are disappointed by the government’s decision, but hardly surprised. From the beginning, the government has pursued a politically driven vendetta against Congressman Grimm and not an independent search for the truth. Congressman Grimm asserts his innocence of any wrongdoing.”

McGinley added that Grimm would be vindicated “when the dust settles.”

An investigation by both the F.B.I. and the U.S. Attorney’s office began more than two years ago with an examination of his campaign fundraising.

First elected in 2010, Grimm made headlines earlier this year after threatening to throw a NY1 reporter off of a balcony following the State of the Union address. Grimm apologized to the reporter, who received the threat after asking about the investigation into Grimm’s campaign fundraising.
