Gov. Tom Corbett on Monday signed a death warrant ordering the execution of the man who was convicted of murdering Philadelphia Police officer Charles “Chuck” Cassidy in 2007.

The execution of Lewis M. Jordan, now 27, has been ordered for June 18, 2014, according to a news release.

Jordan was sentenced to death on Nov. 24, 2009. Executions in Pennsylvania are carried out by lethal injection.

On Halloween morning in 2007, Lewis walked into the Dunkin Donuts on the 6000 block of North Broad Street in the midst of a six-week armed robbery spree. He pointed a gun at the manager’s head and demanded money.

Just then Cassidy, a 25-year veteran, entered the store. He would regularly survey that area in response to recent robberies.

Cassidy immediately grasped the situation and drew his weapon and crouched to the ground.

Jordan ignored the officer’s demands, walked toward Cassidy, and fired. The officer was pronounced dead the following morning.

Despite the execution order, there is a chance Jordan could skirt his date with death.

Serial murderer Gary Heidnik, who was put to death in 1999, was the last person executed in the state. Heidnik, who committed the murders ini Philadelphia, met his fate only after he voluntarily forfeited his appeal process.
