TLC approves 30-cent taxi fare surcharge to fund handicap cabs
New York City taxi fares will soon get a 30-cent surcharge to fund an increase in handicap cabs, according to rules approved by the Taxi and Limousine Commission on Wednesday.
The surcharge would be applied to all fares starting next January and used to make half of the city’s taxi fleet wheelchair accessible.
Currently, only 631 of about 14,000 taxis in the city are wheelchair-accesible, though some 90,000 residents and visitors use wheelchairs here on a daily basis, according to city agencies.
Under the rules, supported unanimously by the TLC board of commissioners, 7,500 taxis would be wheelchair accessible by 2020.
