A state trooper has been relieved of duty and is facing charges after crashing his car and severely injuring a male passenger early Saturday morning while allegedly under the influence of alcohol.

Dale Jenkins, 35, of North Andover, was “immediately being relieved of duty,” state police officials announced Saturday afternoon.

The crash happened shortly before 1 a.m., while Jenkins was off-duty, on Route 114 in Andover. A 53-year-old passenger, who was not identified, suffered serious injuries and was airlifted to a Boston hospital for treatment.

The Essex district attorney’s office told the Boston Globe that the man is not related to Jenkins, who was injured as well. Police said he was treated at Lowell General Hospital, then released to the custody of the North Andover Police Department.

Jenkins is also accused of carrying a personally owned firearm while intoxicated.

In addition to being relieved of duty, Jenkins’ license to carry firearms was suspended, police said.

Jenkins joined the state police force in December 2000, and was assigned to the Gang Unit.

He is expected to be arraigned this week.

State police officials said they will conduct an administrative hearing this week to determine his duty status for the duration of the criminal proceedings against him.
