Police arrest suspect in fatal beating of 68-year-old East Village man
A man suspected of beating an elderly East Village man to death over the weekend was taken into police custody early Tuesday morning.
Authorities confirmed that Jamie Pugh, 20, was taken into the 9th precinct station house days after Ruan Wen Hui died from injuries sustained in a brutal attack on Friday.
Police said that Pugh had not provided a statement by late Tuesday, despite being in custody for more than 12 hours.
NYPD canvassed the East Village and reportedly found Pugh walking east on 14th Street near First Avenue.
Pugh, who is thought to reside at the Lillian Wald Houses in the Lower East Side, lived less than half a mile from the victim’s home.
Hui, 68, was found beaten and bloodied on the sidewalk around the corner from his East Village home on Friday evening.
Surveillance video showed his assailant approaching Hui from behind, then throwing him against the wall before punching and kicking the elderly man.
Pugh was arrested and charged with second-degree murder, robbery and assault.
