The NYPD is investigating after police shot a robbery suspect on the Upper East Side Friday afternoon, authorities said.

Around 1:40 p.m., officers responded to a robbery in progress on Second Avenue near East 68th Street, police said.

The suspect, driving a car, was pursued and confronted by four officers around 2 p.m. near East 96th Street under the elevated part of the expressway. Police said he displayed a gun and was then shot dead by the officers.

He was pronounced dead at the scene.

It was not immediately clear if the suspect fired a shot or how many gun shits were fired by the officers.

The four officers were taken to New York-Weill Cornell Hospital in stable condition, but it was not clear if any of them had been shot themselves.

NY1 reported that the suspect was followed by cops because he was given a dummy pill bottle with a GPS tracking device. The NYPD began a program last year to put GPS trackers in bottle to combat an increase in pharmacy robberies.

Police are investigating if the suspect is involved in a series of Upper East Side pharmacy robberies, according to NY1.
