Mayor Bill de Blasio’s administration took New York City out of the running to host the 2024 Olympics.

The Wall Street Journal reported on Wednesday that Alicia Glen, de Blasio’s deputy mayor for housing and economic development, said that brining the games to New York City in 2024 “doesn’t make sense.”

When de Blasio was asked in mid May about possibly hosting the games and working with Gov. Andrew Cuomo on a bid, the mayor gave a tepid response.

“I think we can safely say that the history of the Olympics, in a variety of cities around the world, has been a mixed bag,” de Blasio told reporters. “There may be a scenario where it makes sense, but I would say the bar is high.”

The city was a last short-listed option for the 2012 Summer Olympics. Under former Mayor Michael Bloomberg, the city launched an intense campaign to compete with other international cities vying for the games.

New York was voted out of the running in 2005, with the games going to London instead.

But in preparation for the bid, the city underwent massive rezonings along the East River waterfront, including Long Island City in Queens as well as Greenpoint and Williamsburg in Brooklyn.

Unlike the Bloomberg administration, the Wall Street Journal reported that the de Blasio team was apprehensive about focusing on neighborhoods that would hold events instead of addressing ongoing economic issues and needs.
