UPDATE: You will be able to see Manhattanhenge this Saturday, July 12.  Get ready!

If you enjoy walking the city and taking pictures, then today is the day you won’t want to leave your camera at home.

At 8:16 p.m., the sun will line up perfectly with cross streets in Manhattan causing a breathtaking view of the sunset and illuminating the entire street with beautiful, warm hues of orange and yellow.

At that precise moment you will be able to setting sun and all its splendor at almost every cross street in the city. This phenomenon is called Manhattanhenge.

Manhattanhenge happens twice a year when the setting of the sun aligns perfectly with the east to west streets of the main street grid in Manhattan allowing you to see (and photograph) an amazing sunset in the streets of Manhattan. The name comes from Stonehenge – where the sunset lines up with the stones in England.

Each year, Dr. Neil DeGrasse Tyson, astronomer and director of the Hayden Planetarium in New York predicts the exact time the sun will intersect with the edges of the city streets. This year, it will be at 8:16 p.m. He also created the name “Manhattanhenge.”

The best time to find a spot in the city should be around 7:45 p.m., so you can witness the entire sunset. The locations to get the best views will be on the East Side at major cross streets where you can see from east to west. We’ve highlighted a few key locations on the East Side. Check out our map below.
