MBTA fires Newton crash bus driver for violating its cell phone policy
The MBTA has fired a driver nearly two weeks after she crashed a bus through a guardrail, injuring seven passengers as well as her self.
The crash, which happened early May 18, left the bus hanging over the Massachusetts Turnpike. The driver, 43-year-old Shanna Shaw, allegedly lied to police when asked whether she had a cell phone on her at the time of the crash. She plead not guilty to obstruction of justice on Tuesday.
The T official, who spoke on the condition of anonymity, said she was fired Wednesday for violating the T’s cell phone policy, which prohibits operators from using personal electronic devices while in the performance of their duties. Before that, Shaw had been suspended without pay.
