Convicted murderer Jared Remy, son of legendary Red Sox announcer Jerry Remy, has apparently been inked with a neo-Nazi tattoo in an effort to protect himself in prison.

The Boston Globe reported Sunday that Remy, who on May 27 admitted to stabbing his girlfriend to death during an argument over their daughter, was photographed in court with the number “88″ tattooed on his right hand.

Mark Potok, a senior fellow with the Southern Poverty Law Center, told the Globe that the marking was “definitely a neo-Nazi tattoo.”

The 88 stands for “HH” — as H is the eighth letter in the alphabet. In neo-Nazi hate groups,”HH” references “Heil Hitler,” Potok said.

Remy, 35, is serving a life sentence for the first degree murder of Jennifer Martel in August 2013.

Prosecutors say Remy strangled Martel, repeatedly stabbed her, slashed at her throat and punched her. Remy originally plead not guilty to the killing, calling the allegations “ridiculous.”
