In 2008, Philadelphia was the location for Barack Obama’s famed “A More Perfect Union” speech on the state of race relations in the U.S., after Obama was slammed for his relationship with controversial Chicago pastor Jeremiah Wright. The March 2008 speech at the National Constitution Center was heavily lauded by media commentators, and Obama went on to win the White House.

With that track record, Philly should look pretty nice in a bid to host the 2016 Democratic National Convention (DNC), announced by the mayor’s office on Friday.

Mayor Michael Nutter made his official pitch on Friday to DNC Chairman Deborah Schultz for Philadelphia to host the DNC, which if hosted in Philadelphia would attract thousands of visitors to the city.

As evidence of Philadelphia’s ability to host large events, Nutter’s letter cites the Catholic Church’s World Meeting of Families, scheduled to take place in Philadelphia in fall 2015, which Pope Francis has been invited to attend, and the Forbes Under-30 summit for young business entrepreneurs to be held this October.

“Philadelphia’s thriving millennial population presents a great opportunity for the Democratic National Committee to galvanize a group that was critical to the successful election of President Obama in both 2008 and 2012,” Nutter’s letter states.

The 2016 convention will take place in August 2016 and will feature the official nomination of the Democratic contender for president in 2016 elections.

Former secretary of state Hillary Clinton remains the most prominent potential Democratic nominee to the nation’s highest office in 2016 elections.

The DNC announced Saturday that they were looking at five options in addition to Philadelphia: New York, NY; Birmingham, AL, Phoenix, AZ, and Columbus and Cleveland, OH.
