Back in April, Google announced that Long Island fifth grader was a finalist in its national search for doodles on the tech giant’s search engine.

But by last week, Audrey Zhang, 11, beat out more than 100,000 submissions nationwide with her colorful concept to better the world by addressing clean water — a design that went live online Monday.

“It takes in dirty and polluted water from rivers, lakes, and even oceans,” Zhang wrote in her description, “then massively transforms the water into clean, safe and sanitary water, when humans and animals drink this water, they will live a healthier life.”

The contraption not only earned Zhang an animated doodle on Google’s homepage but also a$30,000 college scholarship and $50,000 technology grant for her school, Island Trees Memorial Middle School in Levittown.

Google said its philanthropic arm would also donate $20,000 in her name to non-profit Charity: Water for clean water to schools in Bangladesh.

In late May, Zhang flew to Google’s California headquarters for its awards ceremony, where she joined finalists from the 50 states. However, it wasn’t exactly her first time at Google: this was Zhang’s third time as a finalist for the Doodle 4 Google competition.
